Large vipers of Turkey and the Middle East - genus Montivipera
Representatives of this genus are highly toxic species, and the particularly large taxa M. raddei and M. xanthina possess a dangerously large amount of poison. In case of severe intoxication (e.g. after being bitten by an adult specimen), blood pressure may be strongly reduced and local blood clotting may occur. Valenta (2008) describes his own experience with an affected patient after biting both teeth. After admission, the patient had non-bleeding swelling, pain in the limb, nausea with vomiting, which was followed by shivering and numbness of the skin of the whole body. However, he assesses the described course of intoxication as mild and draws attention, for example, to the accusation of the viper M. raddei from fatal bites in the area of occurrence.
The vipers of the genus Montivipera, as the name itself suggests, belong to the mountain vipers with an occurrence up to 3000 m above sea level, the most abundant occurrence is described by various authors from the range of 1500 - 1700 m above sea level. These elevations are commonly above the forest line and the habitat is rocky slopes with sparse vegetation in an extreme mountain climate. Jiroušek (2007) very interestingly describes the biotope and experiences with the species M. raddei in nature in the text and in photographs. In this concept, and also according to other colleagues, successful breeding with the necessity of hibernation can be assumed for most representatives of this genus.
Current breeding
Montivipera albizona (Nilson, Andren & Flärdh, 1990) - group 3,4 from two Turkish localities prov. Sivas and Erzincan. Originally four bloodlines.
Montivipera bulgardaghica (Nilson & Andren 1985) - group 6.5 from the eastern part of the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. Three genetic lines from Germany and Sweden.
Montivipera raddei kurdistanica (Nilson & Andren 1986) – there are snakes of various origins in breeding in the Czech Republic, with a coloration corresponding to the type with yellow triangular saddles in the dorsal pattern, which in adulthood (especially in males) practically completely disappear in the overall black coloration.
Our group from a specific population from Hakkari is devoted to a separate chapter here.
Montivipera wagneri (Nilson & Andrén, 1984) - group 2.3 from Turkey. Originally the breeding consisted of three bloodlines!!! There was specific data on all individuals in terms of their origin, both from the point of view of inclusion in CITES and from the point of view of possible hybrids with M. albizona.
Montivipera xanthina (Gray, 1849) - 1.1 from Lykien, Olympos Mountains (TR: Lycia).
